Since the hockey season is finally underway, and many sports fans are now participating in fantasy hockey leagues for the first time, they are probably wondering what the plus/minus rating in the NHL means. Well, I think I found a suitable description of the plus/minus rating on a Lycos Sports website. Here it is:
"Plus/Minus is calculated for each skater based on the goals scored during his time on the ice (actually playing in the game). Whenever his team scores a goal while he is on the ice, that athlete earns a +1 towards his plus/minus rating. If a goal is scored against that athlete's team while he is on the ice a -1 is included into that athlete's plus/minus rating. Plus/minus is not figured in for power play goals, nor is it applied to goalies."
